Widely praised by conservatives and liberals for his thirteen-year anti-corruption campaign, SIGAR's John Sopko is fired by President Trump
Whistleblower Jon Oberg proposes a plan for inspectors general to fight back
John Sopko—the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction, widely lauded by both Democrats and Republicans for his successful assault against corrupt war profiteers since 2012—has been fired by President Donald Trump.
Above is the termination letter he received on Friday—along with other inspectors general.
Earlier this month, IG Sopko published a major op-ed column about SIGAR’s successes in the New York Times: https://www.nytimes.com/2025/01/02/opinion/afghanistan-audit-reconstruction-us.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare
There is no one who has performed a more courageous and effective job of investigating corruption in both Afghanistan and the United States during and after the war than John Sopko. . . . Nobody.
Here is a plan proposed by the legendary whistleblower, Jon Oberg, for the inspectors general to fight back: https://viewfromthreecapitals.blogspot.com/2025/01/fired-igs-must-show-up-for-work.html
Dr. Oberg wrote, in part:
I encourage the IGs to show up for work this week and, if necessary, seek court injunctions to require enforcement of the law, even if it precipitates a constitutional showdown among the executive, legislative, and judicial branches. Better sooner than later.
IGs are duty-bound to identify and eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse in federal agencies. If they cave in to illegal demands, they are violating their oaths.
